A stye is a small boil/sebaceous gland on the edge of the eyelid, caused by infection. The stye usually develops as a result of a bacterial infection of the hair follicle of an eyelash. There may be a build up of pus, which can be quite painful. Because of infection is contagious, it often passes from one eyelash to another. A doctor can prescribe a cream to prevent this. Anyone with a stye should be careful to use only their own flannel and towel. Tweezers used to treat a stye should be sterilized afterwards.
